Growing up as a sibling of a brother/sister with a disability

I had the chance to attend a panel about growing up as a sibling to a brother with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

And, you know what? These young adults didn’t feel like they missed out on anything when they were growing up … ANYTHING.

They felt like they received their parents attention when they needed it. That they were loved and included. They shared that their brothers’ disease actually enriched their lives because of how they also got to experience love and connection from the Duchenne community.

Whoa. I gotta tell you, I was shocked. Previous to this panel I heard siblings saying they had had a difficult time due to their sib having demanding special needs. This panel helped me realize that this may not always be true.

So, give yourself grace. Show your love to your kids through your actions. And, just do the best that you can.

    They will appreciate it.

    Warm regards,
    Danna
